Filming Day 2- 18th December 2013

Today we continued to film. We started to get some really good shots to fit in the music video. We tried out different shots such as close- ups and long shots.
We also tested out some shots with different spotlights which looked really good when we played them back.

Planning for Preparing to Film

This week we spoke about the planning for the week ahead and for the filming. We have decided that our storyboard will be finished by the end of the week (Friday 22nd November).

Another task we need to complete is the location pictures. This will be done by the end of next week so by the 29th November.

We have also decided that we will start shooting our music video in 2 weeks time which will be on the week beginning 2nd of December. We have given ourselves 2-3 weeks to film which will lead us up to the 20th December. In order to make sure we have all the equipment we need we will need to make sure that we have given ourselves enough time to book the equipment such as the smoke machine so this will all have to be booked by the 25th November.

Marketing an Artist Research- Reuben Jay

In order to get a greater understanding of how we will need to market our artist to our audience we created a presentation about a fake artist named Reuben Jay. We spoke about how we would market him and how we would get him noticed. Me and my partner Aaron came up with the idea of using a YouTube channel in order to get his music videos noticed. We also said that making him do covers of well known songs will also get him noticed by fans of that particular song.

We said that we could use Twitter as a way of gaining a big fan base. We would get him to tweet about what he is getting up to and places he will be in order for fans to turn up to see him. We also said that we would use Facebook for the same reasons as some people don't have Twitter but have Facebook.
Instagram is another good use of social media in order for him to gain fans because he can take pictures of places he has been and things he is doing so the audience feel more involved in his life.

For his first album we looked at other albums and saw that images of the artist is quite popular as well as lyric sheets. We thought using these ideas would be good in order for people to know who he is by his image as well as his music.

We said a good way to get media attention would be to go on chat shows such as MTV because our target age watch this show. We also said that he should go on Alan Carr's Chatty Man because we did research on the type of people that are shown on his shows and there is normally one artist that is not that well known. We thought he could also then have the chance to sing his new single in order for people to hear it. We also researched that our target age 16-23 year olds watch this show.

When I am marketing my artist I will also consider all of these ideas. I will also use a Website where my artist can sell merchandise and have updates of tours dates for his fans to see. I will also use lyric sheets and him for the images for the album. Using social media sites such as Twitter or Facebook is also a good way to market my artist and get him known to a wide range of people.

Album Artwork Research

I looked at 3 different Album's from different artists and looked at what I liked about them and would use in my own Album Artwork. I really liked the bright colours of Mika's album and I really liked the lyric sheets from Jessie J's with all the pictures of her capturing her in different shots and at different angles.

Moodboard of Ideas for our Music Video

I created a moodboard of all the ideas which we have for our music video. One of our ideas is to use people of all ages arguing; children, teenagers and adults. We have also chosen locations for these which can be seen in the moodboard. I have included pictures of instruments because we want to film the band playing. I have also selected images of the equipment such as smoke machine, lights and microphone. Our artist John Newman who is the man in the middle of the moodboard is dressed how we are going to dress our artist.

History of The Music Video

I decided to research about the History of The Music Video to find out more about Music Videos.

Music videos (also known as promo's, video clips) are short films which are used to promote a song through the use of visuals. Many Music Videos are used as a way of promoting singers or bands.

Music videos date back to the time of the first sound films. Music was used alongside many promotional shorts in order to make them more interesting. There were many Disney movies which were based around music from upcoming movies and were used as a type of promotion.

There were many Soundies which were eight 3 minute short films with music could be found in a Panoram Jukebox. This could be found in many pubs and taverns. It was used to view visuals whilst listening to music at the same time.

Between 1950 and 1954 many short musical films were made in America for the use of adverts between programmes.

Many videos were produced for the music programmes such as Top of The Pops in the late 1970's. BBC were very strict with TOTP and the amount of outsourced videos they were allowed to use. Therefore if a good music video was made people would want to buy it in the hope they would see it on the show the following week which increased sales.

In 1981 MTV was produced in America and was the first programme to produce 24 hour music television showing short clips from singers and bands and showing many music videos. The first video that was ever played on MTV was Video Killed The Radio Star by The Buggles.

Many other early MTV videos came from British bands such as Duran Duran. This band was not very popular at first and was not receiving much radio coverage. They produced very visually appealing videos and when broadcasted on MTV Duran Duran became very popular.

Many artists such as Michael Jackson and Madonna had their videos shown on MTV and were promoted by MTV to gain a wide audience.

In 1983 the most iconic music video was released by MTV by Michael Jackson. The song was 'Thriller' and the video was 14 minutes long. The video set extremely high standards for other artists after costing $500000 to film and make. This song and 'Billie Jean' were big videos that influenced more African American artists videos being played on MTV.

Star Image- Chris Brown

Chris Brown is a well known artist that has sold millions of records worldwide. Many people view him as the bad boy that beat up his former girlfriend Rihanna but there are also some girls which see him as the good looking idol that they all want to marry.
Chris is known for his good style with clothes and shoes. He is always dressed in nice designer
clothing. He sings a lot of songs about girls/ women and in his videos we see a huge sense of voyeurism through the shots of the girls bodies.
He is seen as a very loud and confident person because he is always getting up to something whether its fights in clubs or performing on stage in a big, loud way. He is a very good dancer which he shows a lot of in his music videos.

We can see his confidence through the use of shots of his body in music videos which he would have been told to do from the music company in order to gain girl fans.
Chris has a Twitter account which he reguarly tweets from about what he is doing and he sometimes writes quotes. He also tweets pictures and videos of himself.  Here he can gain fans from them being able to see his latest song releases, what he is getting up to and if he is going to be at any social spots.

Chris also has a VEVO account where he posts his music videos and people from around the world can view them. This is a way he can get more fans to notice his music and can also gain more sales of the song from the more fans that watch his videos and like his songs.

For our star image I think the use of the confidence and the loudness would be good because it would make him stand out from the millions of artists around. Also the use of body shots of him could also be a good way to engage the girl fans.

Some of the ideas I have for our artists Star Image is:
  • Confident
  • Loud
  • A sort of good boy that doesn't go breaking the rules
  • Can be seen as good looking to the girls which means a good sense in style
  • He doesn't break the rules
  • He seems quite innocent

Goodwin Applied to Current Music Video- Classic by MKTO

In this music video there is a relationship between the Lyrics and the Visuals which is what Goodwin said when analysing music videos. One word which is repeated quite a lot throught the song is 'classic'. We can see how they have created the classic look through the clothes they are wearing, the card games and the drinking of the cocktails. Another link between the lyrics and the visuals is through the line 'Like a gentleman bringin' glamour back'. This line indicates bringing something back which is glamour from the past which is what is being shown as in todays times people don't dress like that. One of the best links between the lyrics and the visuals is when they sing the lines:

'A star in the 40’s, centrefold in the 50’s
Got me tripping out like the sixties
Hippies Queen of the discotheque
A 70’s dream'

Everytime a different time age is sung a girl is shown in the photobooth dressed how they would have been in that day and age. This shows a strong relationship between the lyrics and the visuals because they are explaining to the audience what the lyrics mean.

There is also a link between the music and the visuals. The drum beats in the music matches with quite alot of the cuts in the video which makes the beat stand out.

During the video there are many close ups of the main singers whilst performing. The close ups are used to allow the audience to make a connection with the artist and for the artist to look into the camera. Goodwin said in his analysis that the record labels demands will include the need for close ups of the artist due to this being away to market and show off the artist as a person.

Pop Rock Genre Music Video Analysis

Demi Lovato's song Here We Go Again is a mainly Pop- Rock genre song. There are many aspects of the song which resembles the typical upbeat pop song like the introduction at the beginning. This intro is upbeat and sounds very innocent and pop like. We then get into the song more and the rock side to the song is shown very clearly through the use of the the band, loud use of instruments, loud singing and the audience. The band is a typical rock band with the use of electric guitars and drums which are use loudly. She also sings really loud and quite scream like at some high notes which rock bands do often. The audience also have the horn signs which is a typical rock like symbol.
We can also see the dark, grungy side to the artist through her clothes which is use to show the rock side to the song also. The beginning of the song shows the pop side due to the use of red colours and the picture of a happy couple.

When making the music video I think some of the ideas and conventions used in the music video should be used. One of them should be the use of the band and instruments because it makes people understand the genre of the music more. I also think the way the artist dresses and the colours they wear also shows the genre and this could also be used in our music video.

Pop Rock Music Video Analysis

An example of a Pop Rock video is Michael Jackson, Beat it. This video has a upbeat pop song with the use of a rock like beat to it. The idea of the pop side in this Music Video can be seen through the dance moves and the upbeat catchy tempo to the song. The rock side to the music video can be seen through the mise en scene of the music video. The clothes which show a gothic, grungy side to the song through the leather jacket. The setting which is quite dark and gloomy also creates a rock like feeling.

Pink, So What is another example of a Pop Rock music video. The song is very upbeat and catchy which gives it a pop like effect. The instruments used are very beaty like a drum set and an electric guitar which gives it the rock effect. Through the music video there are many things which point out a rock/ grungy side to the artist. Tattoo's is one thing which signifies this to the audience. The artist also looks very gothic and grungy with her hairstyle and make- up which is very dark. One thing which also signifies the rock attitude of the artist is the guitar shop and smashing up the guitar which some rock bands do at gigs.

Overall Pop Rock music videos have two sides to them. They normally show a pop and upbeat side which can normally be seen through the music itself and the music video and instruments show the Rock and grungy side.

Genre Analysis- Pop Rock

I have created a prezi in order to analyse our groups chosen genre 'Pop Rock'. The prezi analyses the history of Pop Rock music and shows some artists which have songs with this genre.

Initial Ideas and Music Video Research

This week we have been discussing some ideas of songs that we have for our Music Video.

Our first idea was the song 'Classic' by MKTO. We thought this would be a good idea because the band are not a very well known band. We thought that this way we could help to promote them as a band as well as making a successful music video. The one problem we had with choosing this song was that the video was already very good. They promoted the artists by showing them in different situations, using eye contact into the camera and having different shots of them. The video also used many other ideas that we had for our music video such as a stage, lighting, good costumes and smoke machines.

Another music video which we thought would be a good idea for our music video was 'Love Me Again' by John Newman. We thought this song was very good and we also didn't like the music video much. We thought we could improve this music video in order to draw more attention to the lyrics of the song and more attention to the artist himself. We thought we could also improve this music video by making sure that it was brighter and less dull like the original music video. We have also had ideas of using lighting, smoke machines and a stage. We couldn't think of any points of why we shouldn't pick this song for our music video.

Music Video Director- Sophie Muller

Sophie Muller is an english music video director who is known for working with big artists such as Coldplay, Sophie Ellis- Bextor and Shakira. She gained a Foundation diploma in art after leaving secondary school and then went on to study at the Royal College of Art to gain a masters degree in Film and Television.
Sophie is known for bringing out the personality and emotion of the artist in the music videos. One music video which I love is Stay by Rihanna. This music video is so simple yet so interesting. The use of a simple setting was a good idea because the audience are inticed to watch the video because of the emotion that Rihana portrays in the video.

Another video which Sophie Muller has directed is 'Girl on fire' by Alicia Keys. This video is again very simple yet shows in so many ways the personality and the emotion of the artist through different features such as the close- ups to show the emotion in her face. The video is a lot about showing the strength of the women and how she is 'on fire' Sophie has shown this through many iconic ways such as Alicia cleaning the toys and looking after the children.

In Shakira's music video for 'Hips don't lie' sophie has shown Shakira's bright and bubbly personality through the dancing and the bright colours used. There are a lot of shots of Shakira dancing and even though she is standing in a basic room she stands out wearing bright colours. I think this is good because she is the main part and Sophie has shown her personality.

Overall Sophie Muller focuses on bringing out the emotion and personality of the artists she works with and I think this is important in order to entice the audience to want to watch. I love Sophies videos and will use these techniques of emotion and personality when I am working on my music video.

Intertextuality

Music videos are often described as post modern. They often refer to other media texts such as cinema, television, fashion and photography. This can draw recognition from the audience. This is called Intertextuality. Intertextuality can also be used to create humour out of a pre- existing media text. In music videos intertextuality can be shown in many different ways.
One way intertextuality is shown in music videos is through television. An example of this is in the music video Sabotage by the Beastie Boys.

Another type of intertextuality in music videos is refferring to a movie. Material Girl by Madonna is a mimic of Marilyn Monroes performance of 'Diamonds are a girls best friend' in the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

The Red Hot Chilli Peppers refer to many video games in their music video of Californication such as Grand Theft Auto and Tomb Raider. This is something which would attract a younger generation of viewers.

In the Music video of Addicted to love by Robert Palmer has been referenced in different media texts such as the video for 'Wild Thing' by Tone Loc who has tried to make humour through imitation of the original video by Robert Palmer.

Previous Music Videos

These music videos were made by other Coombe Media Students from 2012- 2013.

13E4
I really enjoyed this music video. It looks as if they have spent a lot of time on planning it and making sure that they had the correct props for the screens. I really enjoyed the different shots that they created of the girl going back in time. They used really good costumes and props to make it more realistic. I also thought the use of the shots of the artist on his own worked well and marketed the artist well. The use of different effects such as the pictures at the beginning and the effects of colours on the shots worked well with the video and I think made it more interesting. One thing that I will be taking from this music video when making ours is the time spent on planning and getting the right costumes. This is because of how much it helps make the video work as a whole and makes it more interesting.

13E6
I did like this music video as a whole as I thought they used many aspects to create a successful music video such as different shots and narrative. They marketed the artists for this song really well by showing them in different shots and also using eye contact with the audience. One thing I would say about this video is that a lot of the shots are quite pixelated and could have been made clearer to make it a more eye catching video. They also could have improved the brightness in some of the shots as it was quite dull throughout. I think that from this video the only part that I will take from it is making sure that I focus on making sure the video is bright and the focus on the artist.

Voyeurism Candy Shop

This music video shows the idea of how the Male Gaze can be seen a lot. The use of the slow motion shots when the girls are on screen. This shows how the men would stare at them. Another thing that shows voyeurism is the different shots of the ladies bum and breasts. This shows what a typical man would look at when they are dressed in short outfits.

In our music video we will not be using Voyeurism because it doesn't suit our song or our genre. There will be women in our video but they won't be performing or trying to capture the male gaze.

Successful Ingredients of a Music Video

I think that a successful music video needs to draw in the attention of the viewer. One important way of doing this is through eye contact and showing the emotion of the music. Another way to make a successful music video is through the entertainment side. Dancing and performing is a major part of a music video because if the performance is bad then it won't get people's attention.
Lip syncing is another important aspect of the music video and this is something which I will make certain is perfect when I make my music video.

I think the setting and lighting of the music video is also another aspect which can either make or break a music video. If the lighting is dull then it can ruin the whole thing because people won't be drawn in to watch it.

Music Video Research- Rihanna Stay

I think this video is either something someone would enjoy or someone wouldn't like. I find it really interesting how the artist (rihanna) can draw you in to watch more when it's all in one place.People who like more exciting videos with bright lights and lots of dancing wouldn't enjoy this as she is sitting in the bath for the majority of this but I think her facial expressions and different shots of her face and tattoo's draw people in.

Music Video Research- Chris Brown Beautiful People

I enjoy watching this video mostly because it's from Chris Brown's and his friends point of view. It shows all of the different things that him and his friends do. The thing which I like the most about this video is the shots of him standing against a wall with the animated writing on it. I think what draws people into this video is because it is fun and different. It's not like a typical music video with the artist performing it also uses real life filming when he is with his friends.

Music Video Research- Rihanna Diamonds

I like this video because of some of the effects that are used. The use of reversing all the broken items looks really good and I would like to use something like this is my final product. I also like the shots of the hands which are slowly loosing touch. I think this creates an effect on the audience. One thing I think that I wouldn't use in my final product would be the bright lights behind the main character as it cuts out some of their face in the shot.

Music Video Research- Beyonce Love On Top

I like the setting for this music video. Even though it is only in one setting the whole time I find it really works. The dancing and coreography work really well and draw attention to the music video. When making my music video I would like to involve some sort of dance as it works really well. The bright lights used also work really well as all the colours are bold and bright.

Music Video Preliminary Task #Power

We were asked to make a short music video which gave us the chance to see what we have to do in order to make a successful music video. Below is our music video to #Power William ft. Justin Bieber.

I think the acting and the lip syncing in the music video went really well. Also the use of the multi- screen.
It would have been better if the green screen was ironed out which would have meant the images would have been better for the backgrounds.

How will you avoid issues when making a good music video?

When making our music video I will avoid problems such as the lip syncing not adding up by making sure that it does fit in with the music. If it does not I will make sure that my group re- shoot until the part is perfect. One thing that would work well is by playing the music whilst filming this will make sure that they can sing in time.

Making sure that the shots aren’t grainy and dull is important. I will make sure to avoid this by using correct lighting throughout the production.

Making sure that it isn’t boring and that people are drawn to watch it is important. Using different costumes and settings is worth doing as it draws people in to the music video rather than one setting for the whole video.

When deciding on effect I will make sure that they suit the song. If they don’t then I believe it doesn’t work well and makes the video look bad.

Another thing that I will make sure works well is the cuts. Making sure that the cuts fit in with the beat and rhythm of the song is important otherwise it looks messy.

AS Project Evaluation

From completing the foundation AS film I have learnt that a lot of time should be spent on the planning and the storyboards to make sure that everyone is on board with what should be happening. We didn’t spend as much time as we should have on the planning because we rushed into wanting to film quickly. Next time I would spend more time at the planning stage as I think it is the most important stage of the production.
We spent a lot of time making sure that the MES and costumes were right for the filming. One thing that should have been better is the usage of equipment. We didn’t make proper use of the lighting we could have used which meant that it was a fairly dull picture quality.
I spent a lot of time doing my classwork and homework and I personally don’t think I need to improve on this much. All my deadlines were met with homework without fail. So there is nothing I had to learn from this. One thing that I could improve is looking back on the work and revising it which would make it easier when it came to the exam.
A couple of members of our group missed quite a few lessons which meant that it was a struggle as we didn’t have as many hands as we could have had if they were there. I have learnt that when choosing our groups I need to make sure that I am in a group with people that will all pull their weight and not people that will sit back and let others get on with it.
One problem that occurred when filming the first time was that it wasn’t light enough and the shot were too dark which meant we had to re- shoot. We made sure that it was earlier in the day which allowed us to have enough light to film it better. This did help but I believe we made a mistake not taking advantage of the extra lighting equipment that was available.
When it came to editing one person in our group knew a lot about the software and was able to show us and teach us all about it. By the end of the project I had learnt many skills about all the software’s that had to be used which is important to take onto A2 with me when making my music video.
I spent a lot of time on my blog but not as much as I should have. I didn’t keep much track of what was happening as I spent a lot of time on the filming side to the work. Our group blog was also not paid much attention to which was a problem but by the end we managed to sort it out and upload a lot of relevant information. On my individual blog I had labels for each of the posts which were listed. This made it much easier to find what I was looking for and keep track of the work.
I let my evaluations slip and I know that in A2 I need to spend a lot more time on them. I believe this was my biggest downfall for this part of the project as I didn’t finish all the evaluation questions and didn’t use many different multimodal ways. Next time I know that I need to focus more on the evaluation questions rather than leaving them till the last minute.
